What is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

You've heard the term a hundred times. Here's what it actually means, why it matters, and what you can do about it today.

So What is SEO, Really?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In simple terms, it's the process of making your website show up when people search for things on Google. When someone in Orlando types "plumber near me" or "best pizza in Winter Park," the businesses that appear at the top didn't get there by accident. They put work into their SEO.

Think of Google like a librarian with billions of books. When someone asks a question, Google has to decide which books (websites) are the best answer. SEO is how you make sure your website is the book Google recommends.

How Search Engines Actually Work

Google sends out little programs called "crawlers" that visit every website on the internet. They read your pages, figure out what they're about, and store that information in a massive index. When someone searches for something, Google checks its index and ranks the results based on hundreds of factors.

The most important factors include how relevant your content is to the search, how trustworthy your website appears, how fast your site loads, and whether other reputable websites link to yours. Google's goal is simple: show the searcher the best possible answer.

On-Page SEO vs. Off-Page SEO

On-page SEO is everything you control directly on your website. That includes your page titles, headings, the actual words on the page, image descriptions, and how your URLs are structured. If your website is about computer repair in Orlando but the word "Orlando" doesn't appear anywhere on the page, Google has no reason to show you to Orlando searchers.

Off-page SEO is everything that happens outside your website. The biggest factor here is backlinks, which are links from other websites pointing to yours. When a local Orlando blog or the Orange County Chamber of Commerce links to your site, Google sees that as a vote of confidence.

What is Local SEO?

If you run a business that serves customers in a specific area (say, along the I-4 corridor or near UCF), local SEO is what gets you into the map results at the top of Google. You know that box with three businesses, a map, and star ratings? That's called the "Local Pack," and getting into it can make or break a small business.

Local SEO involves keeping your Google Business Profile updated, getting customer reviews, making sure your name, address, and phone number are consistent everywhere online, and creating content that's relevant to your area. A restaurant on International Drive and a law firm near Lake Eola both benefit from strong local SEO, but the strategies look a little different.

Why Does SEO Matter for Your Business?

Here's the reality: 75% of people never scroll past the first page of Google. If your business doesn't show up there, you're invisible to most of your potential customers. And unlike paid ads, where you stop getting traffic the moment you stop paying, SEO builds over time. The work you put in today keeps paying off months and years later.

For a small business in East Orlando or Avalon Park, SEO can be the difference between getting five calls a week and getting fifty. It's not magic, and it's not instant, but it works.

Getting Started with SEO

You don't need to become an SEO expert overnight. Start with the basics: make sure your Google Business Profile is claimed and filled out completely, ask happy customers to leave reviews, and make sure your website clearly states what you do and where you do it. If you want to go deeper, consider working with a local team that understands the Orlando market.
