Still One of the Most Common Ports
While USB-C is the new standard, billions of devices still use Micro USB ports - older Android phones, Bluetooth speakers, headphones, e-readers, controllers, and countless other electronics. Micro USB ports are especially fragile due to their design, and broken charging ports on these devices remain one of the most common repairs people search for.
This module teaches you how to replace Micro USB charging ports across a variety of devices. You will learn the differences between through-hole and surface-mount Micro USB connectors, how to identify the correct replacement part, and the specific soldering techniques needed for each type.
Micro USB ports are smaller than Type-C and require careful attention to pin alignment. We show you how to desolder the damaged port cleanly, prepare the pads, and solder the replacement using either hot air or a soldering iron depending on the connector type. Our practice boards include both through-hole and SMD Micro USB pad layouts.
Even as Type-C becomes more common, Micro USB repairs will continue for years. Learning both port types makes you versatile and ready for whatever device walks through your door.
